Hi friend, Have you been hearing the term "Science of Reading" and wondering what it actually means? You're not alone. In this week's episode of The Education Connection, I share my thoughts as a first-grade teacher and explore what the Science of Reading is and how it connects to the five essential components of reading. When I first looked it up for myself a year or so ago, I was happily surprised to see it is all 5 components of reading! • Phonemic Awareness As I prepared for this episode, I found myself reflecting on my own teaching journey. While the term "Science of Reading" may be newer, many of these components have been part of reading instruction for years. I also share an honest reflection: there were seasons in my teaching when I placed more emphasis on fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension than on phonics because I had been heavily trained in those areas. The conversations around the Science of Reading have encouraged me to think carefully about how all five components work together to help children become successful readers, with a new approach to phonics that I am excited about. This episode is about learning, growing, and keeping our focus on helping children become confident, capable readers. Over the next several weeks, we'll be diving deeper into each of these components and exploring practical ideas you can use whether you're a teacher, tutor, homeschool parent, or caregiver. Hi Friends, Today I'm kicking off a brand-new Science of Reading series on The Education Connection podcast! We're starting with one of the most important foundational reading skills: phonemic awareness. 🔊Simply put, phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words.
