Hi Friends, Today I'm kicking off a brand-new Science of Reading series on The Education Connection podcast! We're starting with one of the most important foundational reading skills: phonemic awareness. 🔊Simply put, phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, and manipulate sounds in spoken words. Before students can connect sounds to letters, they need to be able to hear those sounds. A few examples of phonemic awareness activities include: • Blending: What word do these sounds make? /m/ /a/ /p/ These activities are oral and do not require students to look at letters. One important thing to remember is that reading skills should be taught systematically, but not in isolation. Students need phonemic awareness before phonics, but we continue practicing phonemic awareness as we teach phonics. The skills work together and are revisited throughout the year. 🎁 Download today's FREE Phonemic Awareness Sample Activity: 🎙️ Listen to Episode 88 of The Education Connection: Next week we'll be discussing phonics and how students connect sounds to print. As always, thank you for allowing me to be part of your teaching journey. Happy Teaching! |
